Free

As part of the University of Exeter MA Curation course, this contemporary art exhibition which builds upon the theories of Hydrofeminism put forth by Astrida Neimanis, who argues that we are all bodies of water inextricably connected to the natural world. ‘Submerged Bodies: Mythical Reflections in South West Waters’ explores the diverse cultural myths that exist around gender and water within an unfolding global context of environmental disaster.

Three South-West based artists, Ashanti Hare, Melanie Stidolph and Teän Roberts explore offer water as a representation of natural cycles and a portal between worlds. Melanie Stidolph is showing her film ‘Treyarnon’ shot on 16mm film over one day at Treyarnon Bay, Cornwall which engages with the reverberations on the body and mind of attempts to conceive, and the grief and absence that are present alongside that experience. Ashanti Hare displays a commissioned sculptural piece called ‘Journey to Mpemba’ which explores the two lands separated by ocean in the Kongo religion. Finally, artist Teän Roberts exhibits photographs, film, and sculptural coracles from their project ‘The Way of the Eel’ where they imagined a new cult based on folk traditions from the Isles of Scilly.
